[Link]Summertime!
Summer has arrived with a bang. The last two days have been scorchingly hot with nary a cloud in the sky. I moved into new student room last Friday, plonk in the centre of town, right beside the castle and the gardens. The room has a network connection (once I get a PC card), its own bathroom and more storage space than you can shake a large suitcase at. This is all stuff I was lacking whilst with those lovely
Starshot people, so now we're happy.
Meanwhile, I'm not going to pass this year, but it's cool enough here that it might be worth (possible?) saving up enough cash to repeat. Must scope that idea out; I've got until July 31st to decide. I'm currently suffering from a serious case of Flanagan's and Cann's Karlsruher Vortex Syndrome, named after Lesley and James respectively, who finally escaped back to England on Sunday after coming here to play a gig some 14 years ago. This place won't be the same without them (stroking beard and gazing wistfully into the middle distance). Just for the record, I'll be here six months on the 10th of April and
god has it flown...
Actually, I think I'll stay here and open a bar. Yeah.... :-)

Good and bad - 05/04/2001 - 19:05 GMT -

Get a load of
this. It's Ireland.com's breaking news section, but not as you know it - chopped and cropped so it'll fit on one of
these or
these. I'm rather proud of this, although in reality anyone with half an ounce of programming experience could do it
in less time and with less code. I'll set up an
AvantGo channel proper, just as soon as I ask Cliph. Gee, maybe the
Irish Times will hire/sue me!

The irony of all this is that I can't check it myself because, as of yesterday, my computer is seriously banjaxed. As far as I can work out, the supposed
defragger went and completely fragged either the bootloader or the (Mandrake) Linux (for Windows - yes I'm lame) system image file (c:lnx4winlinuxsys.img) so now I can't boot past, er, "stage 1". Might be solved be reinstalling Lnx4Win and hoping it overwrites the previous junk but otherwise it's recovery disc time. Words cannot describe how much I hate Microsoft today.

So close and yet so far - 11/04/2001 - 01:13 GMT -

Finally got connected from my room last night after splashing out on a PC card, and for a while it was luverly, only problem being that I couldn't seem to send/receive cookies (?!). Then everything died. Tried to connect again this morning and nothing doing. Is the network just temporarily down (please, God), or did I change some setting and forget about it? (I was tired/drunk). Or, horror of horrors, is the f-...damned card after packing it in
already?
I am particularly unimpressed at having to check mail and write this entry from an internet cafe, and yes, that is how far I will go to stop the
memepool groupies mailing list (200 new in the last 18ish hours) from becoming unmanageable...

No time to blog - entertaining my mother and aunt who arrived yesterday and will be here until next Sunday. Swapped PC card today and hopefully this will be an end to my net deprivation. Proper update as soon as that happens. Are you all missing me?
Tell me how much :-)

How do I miss thee? Let me count the ways
I miss try scathing scarcasm (sic) and thy pizza eating ways
I miss thy dry wit and thy sleeping all the days
I miss thy sciving (sic) off and thy drinking all the time
I miss thy bad influence and thy something that will rhyme(:o))
I miss thy constant dossing and thy always being late
I miss thy doing worse then me and making me feel great ;oD
How's
that for a welcome back? Network's back, btw. I rule.

Joy overload? - 19/04/2001 - 08:16 GMT -

It's 5:08am and I'm in my room. I'm absolutely exhausted but I'm terrified that if I leave the computer now, it won't work tomorrow morning or when I turn it on next, just like it didn't last time.
I've a 5m cable which should be just enough to move everything across to my bedside table, if I switch ends in the bed...this way I can stay on
IRC as
LeSinge-[asleep].
Now that's what I call achievement.

Excess - 22/04/2001 - 20:00 GMT -
[Link]Excess
This week has been a gastronomic extravaganza. I have eaten out every night from last Monday to last night. I have consumed much steak and chips and pasta and coke, and I've only been to an ATM once... Aren't mothers great? Herself and auntie left this morning. I should have gone with them to the airport but kind of slept in, and they were rather unimpressed with that. It was a crap way to end the visit, and everything else had been going well up to that point (amazingly). In a frantic attempt to get rid of money yesterday, my aunt even bought me two books, one of which is Sophie's World. Read a borrowed copy only a few weeks ago but, as those of you who've read it will know, it probably requires at least another run through before all the concepts are taken in. Etc..
Jesus, this is a boring post...I seem to have temporarily lost my artistic zing when it comes to blogging. That'll be the hangover, then.

I'm slouching in bed, knees up to support the laptop and listening to an old edition of
Geeks In Space. This is very pleasant. If I could find a cheap pizza-delivery place and someone to buy me bogroll and toothpaste etc I would never ever leave this place. I could carve out a little life for myself on the net, although perhaps avoiding individuals like
this poor girl...
Will has relaunched. The other day he sent me this:
1.5MB of chunky kung-fu goodness. This looks like it's #3 in a series - anyone who can track down the other 2 (or more?) wins a free
CDU nipple clamp. Nipple clamps make Baby Jesus go "Oooohh".

Intellectual labour - 25/04/2001 - 00:28 GMT -
[Link]Intellectual labour
I'm now "working", that is to say: I'm preparing (my half of) the Highlander and Scruffy's quizzes for Wednesday and Thursday respectively. This involves wandering around news sites looking for tidbits, poring over
uselessknowledge.com and lurking in DALnet's #trivia irc channel. Then it all has to be typed and translated into German and printed and photocopied (at our expense!). Then on the night we're correcting papers the whole time and then one of us does "the show"...I won't even tell you what we get for it, suffice to say that it doesn't justify the time and effort spent.
But it's fun and I get, like, rispekt 'n' stuff. Aarrrr.

About
This is LeSinge.org v3.0. It's on its sixth* server since I registered
the domain name in November of 2000 and it has gone through several
drastic facelifts in that time, usually prompted by some cataclysmic
event like someone deleting a load of files they shouldn't, or a server
being shut down. This is the maddest layout yet; I'm trying to fit the
entire weblog (apart from diary archives and the gallery) into a single
loading page using all sorts of PHP-generated DHTML jiggery-pokery. The
idea is to make it more inviting to look around since there's no
loading between "pages". It's still a work in
progress (more a proof of concept than anything), so be patient!
I'm Dave Whyte, an Irish CS graduate, German speaker,
linguist and incredibly talented web developer. I'm originally from
Fermoy but I now live in Newbridge with my
wife Beth and our son. I'm currently working for these fine folks and enjoying it
greatly.
"The Monkey"? Eh?
My nom de guerre comes from an old Eddie Izzard comedy sketch. I also like Calvin & Hobbes. I've cobbled together a searchable archive of the strips.
